Spring 2024

Hallo Hoi Hoi Hello Marhaba Bonjour dear newsletter subscriber,

If you wish to attend the rare opportunity to catch us live soon:

April 19th in Liège at Salon Mativa 20.00

This will be a 20min performance of saxophone + drones + our dearest Emilie van der Waals on dance. We will be interpreting some 900 year old chants and stories from this region’s fleuve. We are opening for Ensemble Hopper. Please write to me if you have any questions.

And otherwise, here’s whats up

If you know me you know two things:

1- I hibernate every winter

2- I am a huge nerd

This winter has been spent wholeheartedly in that stead. I am still in the midst of a long geological, hagiographical, gregorian canticle, mosasaur-icle adventure of time and space and research. But slowly emerging from the cave. (literally).

You can see some process notes from that on my artist page at Intro in Situ, aka the experimental music foundation supporting this fruitful season of work. Just scroll down the following link: https://introinsitu.nl/maker:-julia

Last week, with treasured peer soundspace adventurers Petra and Selim, we began recording the next instalment of SAFAS. It will likely be released late this summer and it is deeply exciting to think about you hearing it. Still much work to do: I produce record and mix everything myself so it takes time. Take time to make time.

diy recording at Bankastudios !!

The vibe: thick sounds searching for clarity with an improvised homophony, beat driven, à la previous release from summer 2022 but next pokemon evolution. Also there is a secret beatbox outtake album you will have to beg to hear.

Finally, inspired by the aforementioned Selim aka my sibling in sound who I call the “low brass Avatar,” I have been embracing wind instruments more generally. I always said “I jam flute but never practice, people can only pay me for saxophone.” Which is still somewhat true, but I have been enjoying employing a variety of flutes that came to me in different contexts, from flute, recorder, pennywhistle, mantoura… can somebody please send me a ney?

Saxophonically, I am always loyal to my Conn alto, however I am courting a C melody cousin of this main vessel.

And voice is a wind instrument, there’s been plenty of that in the local schola.

So my dear, please stay tuned for the album, the research project results, and if you’re around my locality, I hope to see you in Liège.

In sound and space,
J
