Summer Archives

Welcome to you dear new newsletter subscribers, it is very nice to meet you here ! Thank you for your curiosity.

After a summer of many curious performances always comes the subsequent organizing of the documentation, reflecting on what happened, pondering next-ness.

3S-AMI-5A: Cretaceous Era Sea Shanties

Here is a performance of my dreams à la slumber party at the natural history museum..

So as you already might have heard there is this mosasaurus I have become friends with. Here below in the video you will see the cousin of the mosasaurus, a prognathodon called Bèr.

Bèr lived where I currently live- except 60 millions of years ago. And that long ago, the limestone hills of the Heuvelland were a subtropical sea, kind of like today’s Caribbean.

Emilie van der Waals, one of our 3S-AMI-5A frequent fliers, comes from a sub tropical sea in Sint Maarten so I thought we should ask her what it’s like. She said:

Exfoliating tiny seashells,
Sand grains like stars in the infinite cosmic sky.
Crystal clear blue waters like no other,
Shades of aquamarine & sapphire leaving nothing to uncover.
Transparency and honest fish- although in being so they might end up on your dish.
Tropical hues of green, red, orange & blue
Only some of the dying coral is a sadder hue.
Salt that stings the eyes & makes you wet your lips
Drying on your warm skin like speckled spit.
Reflections off the water dance with grace, leaving me feel righteously in my place.

I took each group of two lines of her poem and turned them into tunes, interrupted with a re-occuring marlstone blues and texture soundscape. Emilie and I had the honour to present it with love to Bèr at his current home of the Natuurhistorichemuseum Maastricht.

L1 Radio Broadcast

Last week, I had the pleasure to share some of my music with Jo Dautzenberg who shared it on L1 the Limburg public broadscast radio ! It was so nice hearing what he had to say about the music, and he reminded me how much I love the album the pianist Chaeyeon Lee and I made in 2021, Deer You.

You can listen below and also hear a sneak peak of the upcoming 3S-AMI-5A album – this is an accoustic-ish DnB track with lots of saxophones and synth bass, Petra Varallyay on violin, Selim Aydin on trombone, and Alex Lepanto on drums…

On y vao

An interesting phenomena is arising as a result of growing up in Québec and ending up in Maastricht- noticing a defining common sound. Both these places have a distinctive way of speaking and are known for them, and they share a similar vowel sound. It is this deep round aoh sound.

It is further curious as a saxophonist- a beginner can easily call upon many fweeeee and beeeeep sounds, it really takes experience to evoke an aoh sound.

Petra explained to me once there is a distinct Hungairan “O” sound that was also deep and round.

Overtones ! Is it you ?

Deer You.
